Lessons from Jacqueline Novogratz: Building Resilient Social Enterprises

S Edited-163

Strong Social Enterprises are led by founders who combine impact with sustainable growth and are strengthened by a community that uplifts and supports them.

Our Social Enterprise Members recently gathered for an exclusive dialogue with Jacqueline Novogratz, Founder and CEO of Acumen. The conversation went beyond business mechanics, exploring how to balance impact, sustainability, and the resilience required to lead.

Here are some key takeaways from the session:

1. Identify your North Star and balance impact with sustainability
Your mission is more than a tagline. It can serve as a compass when weighing options. When difficult decisions arise, pause and ask: Does this align with our mission? Holding the tension between impact and sustainability helps ensure growth remains aligned with purpose.

2. Approach investment as a partnership, not a plea
Funding is never just about money for money's sake. Consider the type of capital and whether the investor’s vision aligns with your business. Maintain your agency, focus on long-term impact, and view investment as a collaboration rather than a plea for support.

3. Lead with reflection and intention
As a Founder, your mindset shapes your venture. Staying aligned with your mission requires regular reflection to consider when to pivot, pause, or continue. This ensures sustainable growth and helps avoid stepping away too soon or holding on for too long.

4. Grow through accompaniment and supportive communities
Social Enterprises grow strongest when connected to a supportive community. Surround yourself with peers who offer guidance, share experiences, and ask the hard questions that help you see blind spots. Honest feedback and mutual support create an environment that encourages learning, growth, and resilience.

Building the Future Together
The session was a powerful reminder that progress is rarely achieved alone. Founders have a community and ecosystem to support them who can provide guidance, encouragement, and reflection. By leaning on one another, founders strengthen their ventures and contribute to a resilient Social Enterprise sector where lasting impact is embedded across the ecosystem.
